in the early nineteenth century, people began to use gas (gaslight), but the gas pipeline supply by a leak or blockage, very easy to have an accident, people for illumination of reform, very ardent.in fact, edison for himself set the mission impossible: in addition to improve lighting, but also of thomas edison electric light create a set of power supply system.

and he and the dream luoyuan buddies, sleepless do 1600 repeatedly heat-resistant material and more than 600 plant fiber experiment, only produced the first carbon wire bulb, can a burning 45 hours.later he more on this basis, the method of continuous improvement manufacture can ignite 12 hours finally came out with the zhusi bulbs.

the 19th century the 1980s, edison electric light career succeeded, this success than any previous achievements brought him reputation.in the 1980s, before he had little mistake, intermediate later, although he has made great achievements, but also common occurance of failure.edison's most not commendable actions is one of his criticism alternating current, say it has side effects, likely cause of death and injury, but he did not add details.so somebody said, "as he such a mess out many inventions that people about others' new invention saurday attack, this is very contradictory things." he opposes the use of alternating current and direct current, so the approve a fierce debate and stubborn in failure.

good morning, ladies and gentlemen,

last summer, i volunteered(动词) to work as an english teacher in a primary school for children of migrant workers. to be accurate, i didn't volunteer. i was dragged in literally. when my friends first hit upon the idea of this project. i was all against it. 'what?' to spend my vacation standing in the heat yelling at a bunch of nine-year-olds who couldn't even speak proper mandarin chinese? and besides. there's no pay for my toil. no. i am definitely not going. my friends twisted my arms to have me join them.

unexpectedly, the first lesson i taught turned out a lesson for me. the moment i stepped into the shabby classroom. i was touched by the loud, respectful voices in unison. 'good morning teacher !' instead of fooling around, the children were thirsty for knowledge and efficient in absorbing everything i was able to give them. this made me despise myself for i hadn't even prepared for the class. during the break. i leaned over the squeaky desk, chatting with a sweaty boy in the front row. "without air-conditioning, it's really hot here. are you tired?" not at all. said he. shaking his head. it's fine here. my dad builds asphalt roads. that is really tiring and hot.

as summer advanced. my enthusiasm as a teacher grew. i prepared my lesson carefully and even used some methods my teachers used. i organized many group activities to give the kids fun. strangely enough the heat was also becoming less and less unbearable. soon, my one-month volunnteer came to an end. when i was leaving my last class, i turned back and saw smiling faces and waving hands. never before had i ever had such a feeling of sadness. which was, nevertheless, mixed with a sense of enrichment, fulfillment and happiness. i was paid for my work, amply paid, not in terms of money, but something more valuable.

my english was improved, i was able to teach it, although not very professional. i learned about the grassroots-level society. inside myself a heart is growing. a heart that not only beats for myself. but cares for others as well. the volunteer work gave me a precious little chance of saying thanks. to people like the little boy's father who construct highways and undergrounds, build up modern skyscrapers, and make our cities more and more beautiful. to help the children with their english was all i could do at present to show my gratitude to these unsung heroes. the world may not have been fair to them. so privileged and blessed people like me make their life better. whatever i do for them, however, i know it can't be compared with what they have done to improve the quality of life in our cities. ladies and gentlemen. now i realize that voluntary shouldn't be just a one-time personal experience. it should be a lifetime activity of everybody. many of us are now offering assistance to the needy and to each other and our efforts have indeed made a difference schooling,---- or caring for the elderly in nursing homes, and helping out in 20xx beijing olympics, will not only contribute to the harmony of the world but elevate ourselves as well. emerson once said, "it's one of the most beautiful compensations of this life no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself" he was right. i hear that my university is going to organize another voluntary teaching program this summer. this time i won't be dragged in. i will volunteer. thank you !

what is my favorite invention?

we knew there had been many inventions at the last century, for example, electric light bulb, telephone, phonograph, mimeograph machine, automobile, airplane, atomic weapon, computer and so on. what is my favorite invention?

personally, my favorite invention should be computer. in the old days, manyscientists took much time to calculate and deal with research data, so theeffective time in doing research was relatively shortened. for millions of timesof calculating per second by computer, the researchers may have enough time tostudy more important issues. the processing of experiment results became verysimple and easy. aren’t those all evidences that the computer is one of thegreatest inventions in the last century, are those?

hi, everyone. as we all know, many great inventions have brought greatchanges to our life. i think we students can also invent something.

大家好!我们都知道,许多伟大的发明给我们的生活带来了巨大的变化。我认为我们学生也可以发明一些东西。

today i'm glad to be here to talk about what i'd like to invent - a chairthat's good for students' health. it will be made of wood. there will be twosensors in it -- one on the seat, and the other on the back of the chair. whenthe student doesn't sit straight, the chair will remind him .if he sits on thechair for over one hour ,it will make a noise. it won't stop until the studentstands up and leaves.

it will be a useful invention, won't it ?

这将是一个有用的发明,不是吗?

thank you!

谢谢大家!

president clinton:

thank you. thank you, president chen, chairmen ren, vice president chi, vice minister wei. we are delighted to be here today with a very large american delegation, including the first lady and our daughter, who is a student at stanford, one of the schools with which beijing university has a relationship. we have six members of the united states congress; the secretary of state; secretary of commerce; the secretary of agriculture; the chairman of our council of economic advisors; senator sasser, our ambassador; the national security advisor and my chief of staff, among others. i say that to illustrate the importance that the united states places on our relationship with china.

i would like to begin by congratulating all of you, the students, the faculty, the administrators, on celebrating the centennial year of your university. gongxi, beida. (applause.)

as i'm sure all of you know, this campus was once home to yenching university which was founded by american missionaries. many of its wonderful buildings were designed by an american architect. thousands of americans students and professors have come here to study and teach. we feel a special kinship with you.

i am, however, grateful that this day is different in one important respect from another important occasion 79 years ago. in june of 1919, the first president of yenching university, john leighton stuart, was set to deliver the very first commencement address on these very grounds. at the appointed hour, he appeared, but no students appeared. they were all out leading the may 4th movement for china's political and cultural renewal. when i read this, i hoped that when i walked into the auditorium today, someone would be sitting here. and i thank you for being here, very much. (applause.)

over the last 100 years, this university has grown to more than 20,000 students. your graduates are spread throughout china and around the world. you have built the largest university library in all of asia. last year, 20 percent of your graduates went abroad to study, including half of your math and science majors. and in this anniversary year, more than a million people in china, asia, and beyond have logged on to your web site. at the dawn of a new century, this university is leading china into the future.

i come here today to talk to you, the next generation of china's leaders, about the critical importance to your future of building a strong partnership between china and the united states.

the american people deeply admire china for its thousands of years of contributions to culture and religion, to philosophy and the arts, to science and technology. we remember well our strong partnership in world war ii. now we see china at a moment in history when your glorious past is matched by your present sweeping transformation and the even greater promise of your future.

just three decades ago, china was virtually shut off from the world. now, china is a member of more than 1,000 international organizations -- enterprises that affect everything from air travel to agricultural development. you have opened your nation to trade and investment on a large scale. today, 40,000 young chinese study in the united states, with hundreds of thousands more learning in asia, africa, europe, and latin america.
